Timing of Blogs

WordPress provides me a feature called Top Posts which ranks my entries by the total number of page views since they were first posted.  Unfortunately, the built-in reports are limited to last 7 Days, 30 Days, Quarter, Year, and All Time.  I was interested in learning if there were any recent posts that were unusually popular so I extracted the data and did a small analysis of # page views / # weeks posted.

Although the top few posts didn’t change much, two 2008 posts (BI Predictions for 2008 and Love or Fear the Boss) moved into the top 5.  Because several other bloggers have linked to the BI predictions entry, I can explain the extra traffic for that one, but I’m surprised by the popularity of the other.  Maybe the answer is as simple as I referred back to it in a later post called Bad KPIs, bad behavior.

While I was manipulating the data, I noticed something else odd.  Most of the time I post on Sunday or Monday but there are a small number that were posted on another day of the week.  Those blogs universally had a page views per week that was much less than the average.  It’s possible that these entries were less interesting than the others but that seems too coincidental.  My guess is that people have gotten used to reading my blog at the beginning of the week and, if the entry shows up at some other time, it may no longer be in their feedreader when they get around to it.

Anyone have any other ideas?

(P.S. It’s not lost on me that this entry doesn’t occur on Sun or Mon.)
